I am new to sociology and political science and much of what we are studying in this class. I have spend the majority of my time in college in math and science-heavy classes because I intended to study engineering when I left high school. I have slowly switched disciplines since then from engineering to dabble in philosophy and finally settling on business. I hope to learn about business and economics in my time in college and start my own business or businesses.
Class Questions
Why am I interested in civic intelligence?
The term "civic intelligence" is one that I have not encountered prior to this class. Since this was the first time I had seen or heard of it, I was not sure what to think so I researched the term.
- civic
- (adverb) of, or relating to a citizen, a citizenship or community affairs
- intelligence
- (noun) meaning the ability to learn, understand or to deal with new or trying situations. It also could mean the ability to apply knowledge to manipulate one's environment or to think abstractly as measured by objective criteria[1]
So combining the two terms into one, "civic intelligence" means a citizen, citizenship or city's collective ability to learn, understand or deal with new or trying situations. This is a broad term that encompasses nearly every spectrum of human life. Therefore, civic intelligence is an ongoing process that effects every job or duty, effecting every person.
I am interested in civic intelligence because, in my mind, increasing and developing civic intelligence contributes to the betterment of the human race. I believe that I can use the skills and information learned from this class in my future to contribute to the betterment of the human race.
What do I want to accomplish in this class?
I want to develop a deep and enduring understanding of what civic intelligence means to me and how I can use this knowledge in my future for the betterment of my community, of society and of the human race as a whole.
I also want to discover ways of describing civic intelligence to people around me. Civic intelligence is not well understood as a field or practice and I would like to educate them as best I can. I think that the references that we find and use throughout this quarter and beyond will be useful and I hope that this information will become available to the public.
What might I pursue with the game project?
I would like to pursue a board game or a role-playing game that players can interact with in order to learn about civic intelligence. I would like to base my game in this reality and mirror the world today as much as possible. I would like it if there were two sides to this game, one or more players playing for the "good" side or the side that is working toward improving this society and working toward the final goal of sustainability and the other side or the "bad" team working to thwart the other team.
