I Have been working on a case study in winter of 2012 analyzing the transformation of Cuba's national food and agricultural system after the fall of the Socialist Bloc, from whom they received heavily subsidized imported food and agricultural inputs such as oil, fertilizers, pesticides, and replacement parts for farming equipment.
After the collapse Cuba faced a massive economic crisis and food shortage, and had to take drastic steps to create a more sustainable and independent system. Cuba is one of the best examples of a sustainably developing country that exists.
I will post my case study here when it is finished, along with ideas for future research, as my study just barely dips into the huge amount of information that is available for in-depth analysis.
